Bass Players
Bass players. Are strumming techniques important or just different ways of playing?
I like to use my two fingers and pluck the strings but other people use a pick and others use their thumbs. Does it make a difference or affect the sound.
They give different sounds… depends on what you are going for. The fingered would be more mellow while pick would be more attack (an in joke for bass players is that if you play with a pick you are not a real bassist)
You should get hold of a pick and learn to use it. It could become a useful playing tool, especially for fast tempo playing if stamina is an issue.
You can play how you want though its a matter of personal preference.

Piano Players $12.78 In 1994 an 18 track piano sampler of barrelhouse jazz, blues and ragtime was issued as The Piano Players on the American Music label. Featured were Ollie Dink Johnson (born in New Orleans circa 1880) and Charles Hubbard Thompson (born in St. Louis in 1891). Johnson’s primary influence appears to have been Jelly Roll Morton, while Thompson’s life was permanently altered by direct contact with James P. Johnson beginning in 1912. Fortunately for posterity, Charley and Dink were each recorded by publisher and early jazz lover Paul Affeldt. Their music was brought before the public through his Euphonic Sounds record label (named after a composition by Scott Joplin), and some of that material found its way onto American’s Piano Players disc. Within a decade of that release, Delmark honored each musician with his own specially prepared album using material drawn from Affeldt’s Euphonic archive. Dink’s disc was titled Mr. Johnson Signing Off, while Charley was presented as The Neglected Professor. At first glance 1994′s The Piano Players seems to consist of recordings which were revisited on both collections, but closer scrutiny reveals that much of the album consists of alternate takes or titles which Delmark did not include in their track lists. This is good news indeed for those who love and respect these long gone masters of ragtime, barrelhouse, jazz and blues. Anyone who fits into that category of listener might seriously consider nabbing all three albums, for Mr. Johnson Signing Off closes with a pair of delightful old time jazz numbers by pianist Russ Gilman; The Neglected Professor is packed with no less than 26 privately recorded solos by Thompson, and The Piano Players includes what now must be considered their rarest and least known material. Delmark has also reissued the complete recordings of ragtime legend Brun Campbell (who actually studied with Scott Joplin), which were preserved by Affeldt and presented on LP along with some of the Dink Johnson tracks. Blow’n the Blues: Best of the Great Harp Players $14.38 Subtitled “best of the great harp players,” this pulls tracks from various Vanguard releases from the 1960s. Kicking off with five tracks from Junior Wells and five more from James Cotton, the set moves to pick up performances of Big Walter Horton behind Johnny Shines and a duet with a very young Charlie Musselwhite. Musselwhite has four tracks as solo artist, followed by two from the Siegel-Schwall Band. But the true highlight is a live at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival recording of the original Paul Butterfield Blues Band. With Mike Bloomfield on slide guitar, Butterfield tears into a version of Little Walter’s “Blues With a Feeling” that would challenge his studio recording of the tune until Sam Lay inadvertently short circuits the tune a chorus too early, leaving Butterfield and the band scrambling for the ending — a great moment. Some of My Best Friends Are…The Sax Players $9.58 As a follow-up to bassist Ray Brown’s previous record in which he collaborated with several of his favorite pianists, Some of My Best Friends Are…The Sax Players features six major saxophonists (tenors Joe Lovano, Ralph Moore, Joshua Redman and Stanley Turrentine plus altoists Benny Carter and Jesse Davis) on two songs apiece with his regular trio. Although more than 60 years separate the ageless Carter from Redman, each of the saxes originally developed their own voice in the straight-ahead jazz tradition. Highlights of the colorful set include Benny Carter’s playful rendition of “Love Walked In,” Moore’s cooking solo on “Crazeology” (a Benny Harris bop classic which the record mistakenly lists as written by Bud Freeman), Davis ripping through “Moose the Mooche” and Turrentine’s romp on the blues “Port of Rico.” Pianist Benny Green and drummer Gregory Hutchinson provide suitable accompaniment (Green’s solos are consistently excellent) and all dozen of the songs are successful and swinging. As an extra bonus, on the latter part of the CD each of the saxophonists has a brief chat (between 26 seconds and a minute apiece) with Brown about their early influences. There is so much good feeling and obvious mutual respect shown that one wishes these talks were at least twice as long; the Benny Carter segment is most memorable. The Virtuoso Double Bass $13.58 This release from the Titanic label of Somerville, MA, a small operation despite its name, marks a minor triumph for American historical performers, bringing to the market unfamiliar repertory, novel instruments, and historical tunings and playing techniques in a blend that’s pleasing for any listener. The Musicians of the Old Post Road (the name refers to an early Boston — New York connector) get way beyond the usual Bottesini and Dragonetti virtuoso double bass items in chamber music that uses the instrument in a variety of roles. None is a concerto, but all contain challenges for the double bass player. The only “name” composer is Haydn, represented by one of his many divertimenti for three instruments, the Divertimento in G major, Hob. 11/80; the forces that played these are uncertain and probably variable, and the bass part is simply marked “basso.” It is hard to fault the group’s treatment here, however; the presence of the double bass in the trio of the minuet (track 7) is nothing short of haunting. The two cassations by Johann Vanhal and the even more obscure Joseph Mannl (apparently an Austrian civil servant who gave bass lessons on the side) are occasional pieces that set an active double bass part against the usual paired horns with intriguing results, while the Quartet in D major of Johannes Matthias Sperger lets the bass sneak out from a conventional accompanimental role into different registers, even featuring very unusual double bass harmonics in duets with the flute. The more subtle effects offered by bassist David Sinclair are swallowed up in the spaces of Wellesley College’s Houghton Chapel; a more intimate space would have been more successful. But this is a delightfully offbeat chamber recording, especially recommended for double bass players and those interested in Classical-period performance practice. Round About a Bass $21.59 Pierre Michelot was one of the very best jazz bassists in Europe, though few fans think of him as a bandleader, composer, or arranger. This reissue of an LP made for Mercury dates from 1963, where Michelot is joined by some of the top players on the continent.
